Friday night is Seafood Night! Shrimp Fra Diavolo!

Where I come from, Friday Night has always been seafood night...
I know that to some it may be old hat and no one really sticks to this anymore these days...but, being a good Italian, Catholic boy I like to keep traditions and my heritage alive and well.... :) LOL
Plus, putting aside the old tradition and religious influence of fish on Fridays....what's better than looking forward to a nice seafood meal once a week that is healthy and good for you?:)
This is my Shrimp Fra Diavolo...
Fra Diavolo means "Friar or brother devil" and is said to be a Southern Italian-American creation...a spicy sauce for pasta and shellfish made usually with either shrimp or lobster....although, some say(including my Father) that it comes from Naples and was passed down through generations....and it was made popular here in the US in NYC....whatever the case...it is delicious!
You can adjust the "Heat" according to your taste....

Ingredients:
Olive Oil
Garlic
Red Pepper Flakes
Parsley
Basil
Pinch of Oregano (not too much)
1 Teaspoon of lemon juice (not required)
1 can of San Marzano whole plum tomatoes(I prefer these..but any can of Crushed, puree or whole tomatoes is ok...whatever you like to use for your marinara sauce)
About a half a pound of raw unpeeled shrimp.... I like them shell on..gives much more flavor and the shrimp cook better...but you can use whatver shrimp you like or may have on hand....
A touch of  wine-white preferably...but red ok...just improvise:)
I will have the full recipe in my upcoming Cookbook...

The shrimp simmering in the sauce...

We are mourning...

I watched the Vigil for the Newtown, CT tragedy tonight….
It was very sad...
The world is mourning....
It was very powerful...
One can gain so much through, listening, watching, learning, understanding....
So many different thought provoking messages come from times like these...
My thoughts...
Through these trying, grievous, difficult times… and as it should be through ALL times…
No matter who you are, what you look like, where you come from, what your name is, what beliefs you may have, what language you speak, what faith, what religion or what no religion, what politics, what social status, or what race, or color you may be…we stand together….
We are one…ONE human being, ONE town, ONE community, ONE state, ONE country, ONE world, ONE planet, ONE universe… A FAMILY….Together…
With love, respect, compassion and understanding for all….

Soup night again!:) Stracciatella alla Romana

It's cold! :) lol
So....Yes, it's a soup night...again!:)
Tonight's Roman Egg Drop Soup - Stracciatella all a Romana...
I made it without the spinach...which I sometimes prefer....
Stracciatella means  "little shreds" or "little rags"... and it refers to the strands of cooked egg that form from the method of cooking...the whisking and when the soup is swirled...

Ingredients:6 cups or so of chicken broth (reduced-sodium preferably)2 large eggs2 tablespoons freshly grated cheese (like Parmigiano-Reggiano, or Asiago) and a bit more for serving at the table....2 tablespoons chopped Italian flat leaf Parsley2 tablepoons chopped fresh basil leaves (optional)1 cup lightly packed spinach leaves, cut in thin strips(optional)Orzo, Pastina, Stelline or other small pasta (optional)Pinch of nutmeg (optional)Lemon Zest (optional)Salt and freshly ground black pepperA few red pepper flakes...

I will have my versison of this wonderful classic soup with a full detailed recipe  in my upcoming cookbook!:)

My Homemade Lentil Soup

I made a big vat of hearty Lentil Soup for this cold, blustery Sunday night!:)
This is one of my all time favorite healthy soups...and it tastes even better left over the next day and through the week....
All you need to is....
A dried bag of lentils, olive oil, onions, carrots, garlic, celery(chopped and use some of the leaves too), 1 or 2 bay leaves, salt, freshly ground black pepper, a pinch of red pepper flakes, 1 can of tomatoes(you can use puree, whole peeled, crushed, paste or sauce...whatever you have on hand) or as I use, the leftover tomato sauce I have from another meal :), chicken or beef stock(low sodium preferably), water....

Saute onions, garlic, celery and carrots in olive oil until softened...
Throw in the rest.....add the water, broth, tomatoes, lentils, etc....
Simmer until lentils are tender...discard bay leaves

Add a drizzle of Extra Virgin Olive Oil and/or red pepper flakes, some grated cheese(parmesan or asiago) on top to finish if you like...

Options:
You can also add some ham, or prosciutto, sausage, soup bones, or bacon...and/or spinach or escarole too...for flavor if desired....
I will definitely include this recipe in more detail in my upcoming cookbook! :)

Hope you're all enjoying your Sunday! Buona Domenica a tutti!

Saying goodbye to an old friend...Trace Elliot Velocette

Said goodbye to an old friend tonight...
After many years of loyal service...I sold my Trace Elliot Velocette Amplifier...
This amp is pretty rare and was used live and on many of my recordings over the years and has been one of my secret weapons so to speak :)
For those that may be interested...
The Trace Elliot Velocette is a True Class A valve amplifier. This is an original model... made in the UK…It is 15 watts, has a custom 1x10 Speaker, powered by two EL-84s with two 12AX7 preamp tubes, point to point wiring…Racing Green Tolex, Extension speaker output for use as a head...and was like brand new w/ custom amp cover…
The amp is small, light weight and awesome for small gigs miked or not miked depending on the size of the room/venue...and it is a great recording amp….awesome with guitar effects pedals...
Killer sound…great tone…beautiful, crispy clean and also cranked up, it roars like a Vox AC30 or Marshall Plexi  with excellent sustain...and just the right amount of "break up"...
You can also get subtle, bluesy Fender Champ, Blues Junior sounds…it's an extremely versatile amp!

Some have expressed their sorrow and sent their condolences due to the fact that I had to sell this amp...and for the reason behind my decision...And I thank you all so very much...it was a difficult decision  and I was very attached to it...which many of you will probably understand and it might sound funny to some of you too..but their are a lot of memories and history behind it....and I can be that way and quite sentimental when it comes to certain things....but, I will say,
as a general rule I do not put much stock in material items...sometimes there are things you just gotta do in life...you know? And things that are much more important than "stuff....
Maybe some of you can relate...maybe not....it's all good really....

The amp's age was questioned over on Facebook this past week...and it isn't that old really...early 1990's...but it is a custom made "Boutique" amplifier and was built/meant to be retro in style...and has a very cool look...and with it's racing green tolex covering, it is very reminiscent of the 1950's era...

I have a new page up here on my blog dedicated to gear...info, thoughts, specifications, etc...etc...
and many items are for sale...so please check it out....and get in touch if interested...

New Joe Gande page on the World United Music Website!

Hi everybody, Hope you're all enjoying an awesome weekend!
It's been a tough week personally for me...yet through it all...such a great week in many ways, on so many levels when it comes to my music...

One of the things I really dig about this business and the whole "online" experience...is being able to connect with so many wonderful "like-minded" people from around the world....I have been so lucky in this manner and feel blessed to have met so many of you whether it be online or in "real life"....

There are so many dedicated, supportive and selfless people out there that put there time, effort and energy into the listening and promoting and sharing their thoughts about the wide array of independant, self produced, financed and promoted, "unsigned" music available...
and...nothing helps us as an Indie artist more, besides buying our cds and merchandise...than the spreading the word about our music...

Please check out this new profile page for “Joe Gande” on the awesome World United Music!
A huge Thank You to Stewart Brennan for the support and for including me on his website!

Please visit the site, comment on my page and share and take a look around...there is so much to see and hear...music of all styles and genres for all tastes....

A little about World United Music...

World United Music promotes Independent and Unsigned artists on two websites dedicated to bringing back variety and quality music to the music fans.
The websites are filled with Indie Artist and Band profiles, their music, videos, a radio show, video play lists, and additional features that include the golden age of Rock 'n' Roll
Each month 12 new posts are added to a growing list of current and future stars that total 250 acts.
The goals of World United Music are very simple, we want to bring exposure to these artists so that they may pursue their craft while also offering music fans an alternative to the crappy commercial radio with an online website where they can find the best music of today and yesterday.
"Why am I doing this? I got tired of waiting for something to happen after hearing so many great tunes that were not on the radio airwaves. As a former DJ, I decided to do something about it."

Ah, It's Friday...that means seafood where I come from! :)

Hi everybody,
Tonight's dish is Capellini all’Aglio con Acciughe!
Ah, it's Friday...call me a traditionalist...or maybe just a good Italian Catholic boy :) lol...but that means a seafood dish for me:)...
So...I made some Capellini all’Aglio con Acciughe! (Angel Hair pasta w/ Garlic, Olive Oil & Capers,  melted anchovies, some black pepper, a few red pepper flakes and a sprinkle of Asiago cheese if you like). Or, Pasta con Alice(Aleechay) as we say in my house:)
You can also sprinkle some bread crumbs over the top if you'd like to finish the dish...
I have to say...I love this dish...and, it is a personal favorite of mine. I usually have this as one of the 7 fishes dishes on Christmas Eve...or on Fridays...but it is good any day of the week , any time of year. The anchovies and capers provide such an intense, salty flavor..Delizioso!

Some background...
Technically...Acciughe (singular 'acciuga') are anchovies...small fish preserved with salt and canned in olive oil...Another word for anchovies in Italian is Alice(Alici) (pronounced Ahleetchee) which refer to the fresh fish...but in my house growing up we just called this dish "pasta con alice"...or as my Grandfather would say "Basta con Aleetch) There are many dialects in Italy...depending on where you come from...there are many ways to say the same things..form town region to region, city to city or town to town...
Anchovies are integral to Mediterranean cuisines...In Italy, they are used extensively in many dishes such as Puttanesca sauce, Bagna Cauda, Pizza....and in so many sauces and recipes...for flavor and to add saltiness...you also find them in Worchestershire Sauce and Caesar Salad dressing....and it is available as a paste for cooking...

I will definitely have this recipe in my upcoming Cookbook! S
o stay tuned for a more detailed and thorough explanation of this classic, very simple Italian dish!
Wishing you all a great weekend! Buon fine settimana a tutti!
Love,
Joe

When life hands you lemons......make a loaf of homemade Italian bread!:)

When life hands you lemons....hmmm.....make a loaf of homemade Italian bread!:)lol

Yeah, I know the expression..the response is "make lemonade"....lol...but, well, it's been a rough week on the homefront for me...stress city! So I decided to make a homemade bread....
I know some of you can probably relate in some way?

This is a very simple recipe...a little flour, touch of salt...and I didn't have any yeast..so I used beer instead...it really came out delicious!:)

Have a great Saturday everyone! Buon Sabato a tutti!! :)
Love,
Joe
